Testing Methodology

Water Test: Each product was dissolved in water and observed for deep blue coloration characteristic of methylene blue. Deep Blue = Pass. Brown, amber, tan, clear, or weak blue = Fail.

Lab Test: Third-party laboratory analysis measured actual methylene blue content. Detected amount within +/-20% of the label claim = Pass. No methylene blue detected, no lab result available, or outside +/-20% = Fail or Not Tested depending on the case.

Summary Verdict: Recommended, Acceptable, Avoid, or Not Tested. Recommended is reserved for Nutricel's own products that passed our independent lab test. Acceptable means a competitor product either passed our independent lab test and comes from a credible brand, or is a genuinely trustworthy, established company (real site, clean Amazon track record) we're comfortable showing even though this specific product has not been tested yet - shown for reference, not a recommendation. Avoid means it failed a test, only passed the water test without an independently verified dose, was caught with fake reviews or listing violations, or ships from a China-based seller (an automatic Avoid). Not Tested means we have not tested it yet.

Brand Credibility: Excellent, Good, or Poor based on whether the brand has a real website, contact information, transparent policies, and an identifiable company presence.

Amazon Seller Credibility: Excellent, Good, or Poor, weighted from seller history, listing behavior, review integrity signals, seller transparency, and seller country. A domestic (USA) seller is a positive signal; a China-based or anonymous overseas seller is treated as a high buyer risk. Shown as Not Rated until a seller has been individually reviewed.

Test Score: Pass, Fail, or Not Tested based on lab and/or water test results.

Testing was conducted and funded by Nutricel. Results reflect the specific units and lots we obtained and may not represent every batch of a given product.

Methylene Blue Testing: Frequently Asked Questions

How many methylene blue brands actually pass independent lab testing?
Of 61 methylene blue products we independently water-tested and lab-tested, 22 (36.1%) passed our testing and 39 (63.9%) failed. A product passes only when the water test shows a clean, vivid blue solution and the lab assay confirms the methylene blue content is close to the amount claimed on the label.
How can you tell if methylene blue is real or fake?
Dissolve the product in water: pure USP-grade methylene blue produces a clear, vivid blue solution, while brown, green, or murky water points to fillers, impurities, or oxidation. A laboratory assay then confirms whether the actual milligrams of methylene blue match what the label claims. See how third-party testing works.
Are USA-made methylene blue brands better than ones shipped from China?
Country of origin alone does not guarantee quality, but in our testing a large share of failing products were sold by overseas sellers. Every product in this database lists its seller's country, so you can filter and compare USA-based and overseas brands directly before you buy.
Does real methylene blue turn your urine blue or green?
Yes, genuine methylene blue is excreted by the kidneys and commonly tints urine blue-green, though the effect varies with dose and hydration. A complete absence of any color change can sometimes indicate an underdosed or low-purity product. Read why methylene blue turns your pee blue.
What does it mean when a methylene blue product fails the water test?
Cloudy, brown, or greenish water after dissolving indicates fillers, contaminants, or degraded methylene blue rather than pure pharmaceutical-grade material. Products that fail the water test typically also under-deliver on their labeled dose when sent for laboratory assay.
Why are some products marked “not yet tested”?
104 products in this database are listed for reference but have not completed our water and lab testing yet. They are labelled “Not Tested” until results are in, and we update the database as new test results are completed.
